First Red cameras ship today; changes

Today is the day; the first 25 cameras are going out. Sounds like the Red folks have been burning the midnight oil to get things together in time, but everything is coming together just fine.

A few more news items:

  • The camera body is up to 10 pounds due to a new sensor cooling system and more robust construction.
  • The Premium Production Pack has been canceled. You now buy the Basic Production Pack and add the individual aditional components that you want.
  • It sounds like Red is planning a bunch of firmware upgrades over time.
  • Should Red be rated at ISO 320 or 500? It’s your call.

“Red Alert” REDCODE RAW processing

Jim Jannard says:

Since REDCINE is being rebuilt and won’t release for a week or two, RED Alert! will be the mini-app of choice. At some point we will post it with sample footage. Be advised that it is a Mac app only (REDCINE will be both Mac and PC). You will need RED Alert! and the REDCODE node (you will put the REDCODE node in HD/Library/Quicktime folder). This mini-application will open .r3d files (REDCODE RAW), allow you to view the file, select DI mode or Standard mode, and output to Quicktime wrapped files in 2k, 1k, and .5k for ingest into FCP or viewing in QT. You can also output to DPX 2k, DPX 4k, 4k TIFF, 2k TIFF, in Linear, REC 709, or Log. You can make some corrections prior to output. We will help you choose settings depending on what you are trying to accomplish.

David Lynch on digital

MTV: You shot “Inland Empire” using digital technology. Will you ever go back to film?

Lynch: Never. Digital is so friendly for me and so important for the scenes, a way of working without so much downtime. It’s impossible to go back. Film is a beautiful medium, but the world has moved on. The amount of manipulation we can do, anybody can do, is so much the future. Film is so big and heavy and slow, you just die. It’s just ridiculous.
